This news article appeared in the New York Times on March 26,
1955 reporting on the oldest known New Testament Bible
written in the language "used by Christ". The article
noted how it was taken to the White House where President
Eisenhower viewed it. The Bible was said to be insured
for "an hour and a half" in the amount of
$1,500,000 US dollars.
The President of the USA commented on "the beautiful state
of preservation" of the doeskin and the "still fresh"
appearance of the red ink made by the scribe who penned it.
Codex simply means that it is a bound New Testament Bible as
opposed to a scroll format, it was transported by a heavily
guarded motorcade to the steps of the Library of Congress
for a handing-over ceremony.
The Acting Librarian of Congress was a Mr. Verner Clapp who
signed a receipt to take possession of the codex.
Douglas L. Hatch who was the attorney for the Aramaic Bible
Foundation said that it was "being loaned with no
expectation of ever taking it back."
Mr. Hatch explained that the Aramaic Bible Foundation had
contracted to purchase the codex from the owner and they
were then in the process of raising money to make the
payment. They also intended to make copies available
to educational institutions and make a translation for
printing and distribution.
A group of scholars had examined the codex on behalf of the
Library of Congress and verified that it was authentic.
They stated that the text was the "standardized (Peshitta)
form of the Aramaic-Syriac version of the New Testament.
The experts were convinced that a translation would clarify
some New Testament expressions. Mr. Hatch pointed out
an example how the Aramaic clarifies things by offering the
example that the word "camel" and "rope" were "similar
in the language used at the time of Christ."
He noted that the figure of speech Y'shua (Jesus) used in
reference to the rich man's challenge to enter into heaven
would have better been translated, "It is easier for a rope
to go through the eye of a needle." Obviously it makes
no sense to speak of a camel going through the eye of a

It is believed that the Yonan family took the ancient New

it from there to the United States of America.
